A woman who violently forced a Jet2 flight to make an emergency landing has been pictured as she's sentenced to prison.

On a flight from Belfast to Antalya, Turkey, Heather Anne McCarroll assaulted staff and screamed obscenities down the plane's intercom in a drunken rage. Now she's been jailed, the 38-year-old from Cullybackey, Co Antrim, has been pictured for the first time.

Antrim Magistrates Court heard social worker McCarroll started shouting and swearing at crew members, calling the cabin manager offensive names and continued to drink more alcohol, becoming increasingly abusive. She also openly used a vape, despite them being banned on board.

Judge Nigel Broderick described the mum-of-two's actions as "possibly the worst form of behaviour that I have come across" and said he was minded to impose a deterrent sentence because "there are too many of these incidents".

McCarroll started "shouting sexual obscenities" in the plane's loo and was heard "kicking the door". The toilet was left in such a state that it had to be shut for the rest of the flight.

In Ballymena court, it was revealed that McCarroll grabbed the intercom after the toilet incident and began "screaming down it loudly". The captain had to switch it off to hear air traffic control.

McCarroll "punched a crew member to the throat" while being held back by off-duty coppers on board. She then went to the back of the plane where she attacked two other cabin crew members. The pilot had to land the plane as soon as he could after staff raised the alarm.

She would have been tried in Turkey, where the flight landed, but due to language issues, the trial was held in Northern Ireland, according to Belfast Live. McCarroll told PSNI she had taken diazepam with booze before the flight to calm her nerves, and said sorry for "what little she could remember".

District Judge Nigel Broderick gave her a four month jail sentence, as well as fines totalling £300. She was let out on bail while waiting for an appeal.
