    Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes following a gas leak at a doctor's surgery in Vauxhall, London.

    Emergency services are at the scene having been alerted to the problem this morning (Thursday, November 16).

    Around 200 people have been evacuated from neighbouring properties. The London Fire Brigade has warned that the disruption could last all day.

    A 100 metre cordon has been set up at the site. Those who have been turfed from their homes are being offered support at a respite centre.

    The fire service said in a statement: "Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters are at the scene of a gas leak at a doctor's surgery on Jonathan Street in Vauxhall.

    "Around 200 people from neighbouring residential buildings have been evacuated as a precaution and a 100 metre cordon is currently in place. A respite centre has been set up at a local church for those who have been displaced from their homes.

    "Two people have been assessed by London Ambulance Service crews at the scene. A number of road closures are currently in place including Jonathan Street and surrounding roads.

    "Crews are working alongside multi-agency service partners to make the scene safe. The Brigade was called at 0433. Crews from Lambeth and Soho fire stations remain at the scene."

    The Metropolitan Police said it was made aware of the gas leak at 5am this morning. The force said residents were evacuated "as a precaution while engineers work to resolve the situation", and told people to avoid the area.

    Lambeth Council said it was supporting residents affected by the gas leak. The council added that work was "ongoing" to resolve the situation.
