Captain Sandy Yawn told Bravo about her engagement first for special reason

Below Deck Mediterranean: Bravo previews latest season

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Below Deck Mediterranean.

Below Deck Med star Captain Sandy Yawn told bosses at Bravo about her engagement to girlfriend Leah Shafer before anyone else.

The 59-year-old captain got down on one knee for the gospel singer, 10 years her junior, with a fairytale-esque proposal in a secluded cove with flowers and a trio of violinists.

The reality star shared a few adorable snaps of the moment with Leah clearly overjoyed at the beautiful proposal.

Alongside the pictures, Sandy posted on Instagram: “It’s official! I asked Leah to marry me and she said YESSSS. We are engaged. Stay tuned for wedding”. (sic)

Even though she couldn’t wait to share the amazing news with her 658,000 followers, the first to actually hear of their engagement were not her family or friends but those at Bravo.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Sandy explained: “You know why [Bravo]?

“Because if it wasn’t for Bravo airing our show, we never would have met.

“She reached out to me through social media in June and in October I read it and the reason it stuck out is what she wrote.

“And I clicked on it and I was doing a tour in the US and it had a music component and I was like ‘she can sing!’.

“So I clicked on it and then we met a month later and the rest is history.”

Sandy added how she knew from the beginning that Leah was the one for her.

“From the very first time I met her [I knew I wanted to propose] I knew, because when you know love, you know love”, she said.

“I think you have to live with someone and learn from each other and see how each other are emotionally, Leah and I have grown emotionally in what we want to change and how we want to be better for each other and that’s what we’ve done and it’s time.”

Sandy has been leading crew mates on the reality series since season two and will be returning for the upcoming new episodes.

And going by the description, it wasn’t exactly the easiest job this time around.

It reads: “Set amidst the mesmerising Italian Riviera and the historic façade of Genoa, Italy, it’s all hands on deck this season for Captain Sandy and her team.

“From outrageous guests to after-hours antics, the boat gets rocked throughout each charter as the crew navigates complicated dynamics and unexpected rifts.

“In a franchise first, unprecedented staffing changes dominate the season, which tests each department as they struggle to find their sea legs through unforeseen turnover.”

Stream the brand-new season of Below Deck Mediterranean on Hayu from September 26. Captain Sandy also tours theatres in Captain Sandy Live from September 21.
