"I thought that was ridiculous but, a couple of hours later, I thought I would probably marry him."

Mitchell later admitted to The Guardian that he felt the same way, and was willing to wait a long time to date the show host as she dealt with her father's death.

"I waited three years," he laughed. "Isn’t that weird? Aren’t I odd? I can’t explain it other than to say I couldn’t do anything else. If only I’d known I just had to wait three years…I would gladly have suffered 10 times as much."

David reflected on dating in his twenties and being single for a long time before finding Victoria.

He told The Guardian in 2012, shortly after they got engaged: "I think a lot of people like to be going out with someone, even if they’re not 100% sure about that person, and I think that’s normal.

"Those people are normal. But I never felt like that, and that made me worry because I thought, well, that means you’ll stay single – you don’t want it enough.

"I thought I was letting this great barrier of embarrassment doom me to expiring in solitude."
