Strictly’s Amy Dowden contracts sepsis in latest heartbreak during cancer fight

Amy Dowden has shared that she contracted sepsis following her first round of chemotherapy earlier this month. The Strictly Come Dancing favourite explained that she was initially feeling okay, but alarm bells started ringing when her temperature soared to 37.7 degrees Celsius and she felt sick.

Her symptoms progressed rapidly and she soon became “very ill” with breathlessness and pain in her chest.

Amy, 33, told Hello! Magazine: “I felt freezing cold but I was all clammy and shaking. My mum and dad rang my red card [which provides the chemotherapy team’s contact details and current treatment information] and they said to hang up and ring the ambulance.”

The dancer was taken to hospital and doctors put her in intensive care to fight the life-threatening condition.

Amy’s mum Gillian added: “We didn’t know what to do with ourselves, everything was looking very serious.

“What I couldn’t believe is how quick the situation can change and how little time you have to respond.”

After receiving multiple antibiotics, Amy started to show signs of improvement and was discharged from hospital after four nights.

According to the NHS, sepsis is a rare but very serious reaction to an infection when the immune system overreacts and starts to damage the body’s own tissues and organs.

Sepsis, also called septicaemia or blood poisoning, is hard to spot because symptoms can be similar to other conditions such as flu or a chest infection.
