EastEnders star Max Bowden has teased a ‘very different’ year ahead for character Ben Mitchell.
The actor, who plays Ben on the BBC One soap, caught up with Metro.co.uk at the Inside Soap Awards to discuss what’s ahead, and he promised some ‘turmoil’ in the immediate future.
‘In episodes coming up soon, Ben and Jay have a bit of turmoil,’ revealed Max. ‘With the fallout of Lola’s death, everyone is dealing with their grief in different ways.
‘Ben tries to be the adult in the situation without actually being an adult!’
Jay (Jamie Borthwick), as viewers know, has struggled since Lola’s tragic death, with recent scenes having seen him spend time in the company of escort Nadine (Jazzy Phoenix), who bares a striking resemblance to his beloved wife.
As a result, he’s been sneaking out of the flat in the small hours of the night, which doesn’t go unnoticed by Ben, with he and Jay coming to blows next week, which are likely the scenes which Max is referring to.
But it’s not all conflict, however, with Max revealing that there is also ‘a lot of beauty’ in what’s to come.
‘The brothership of Ben, Callum and Jay becomes set in stone,’ he told us, ‘and we’ve got a lot with [Lexi]. It’s going to be an interesting year I think – and very different!’
Consider our interests piqued!
Max, who took over the role on Ben four years ago, has received acclaim for his performances, with fans having crowned him Soap Superstar at the Inside Soap Awards.
‘I’m incredibly humbled,’ he said of the win. ‘I’m not a superstar, I work with superstars. Everyday I get to work with Perry Fenwick, Emma Barton, Jamie [Borthwick] and Danielle [Harold]. I’m a product of their work. I’m eternally grateful, incredibly.
Ben’s a difficult character – he’s got a lot of deep rooted issues. Unhatching them is a joy for me as an actor so to know that it’s resonated means a lot.’
