Antiques Roadshow guest wowed by value of ‘rarest’ broken watch bought for £20

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned after she was told the true value of an old broken watch her father bought for just £20.

In Sunday's episode (November 19) of the BBC show, members of the public flocked to Powis Castle in Wales to find out whether items that have been sitting in their home for years have any real value. As experts gave their opinion on a number of items, one woman was eager to find out more about a watch her dad picked up at an army surplus store.

Branding it the "rarest of items", Richard explained that the watch would have originally had a large leather strap — which was now missing. He even claimed it would have been worth even more if it were made by A Lange & Söhne.

A Lange & Söhne was the German company which provided time pieces to the Nazis — and to his surprise it was made by them. He opened the watch and said: "Joy of joy it's A Lange & Söhne the one [all collectors] want."

Richard added that the watch was manufactured in 1941 and was in high-demand. However, it became a rare item, that "all collectors want" after the factory was bombed in 1945.

To which, Richard replied: "Pretty good buy. I think i would be very happy if I had paid £20."

He then informed her that the item was worth between £8,000 and £10,000, leaving the woman in total shock. "I might not take it home to [my father]," she joked.
