I was quoted £1k for my dream staircase so transformed it myself for less than £200 – it was so easy, you can do it too | The Sun

AN interior design fan has shared how she was quoted a whopping £1000 for her dream staircase.

So she decided to take matters into her own hands, get stuck into some DIY and transformed them herself – saving major money along the way.

Laura runs a social media account (@thehexagonalhouse) dedicated to all things “DIY, upcycling and interiors”.

And in one of her latest posts, she unveiled her impressive before and after of her the central staircase in her home.

She showed how the stairs had previously looked boring, worn and beige, but that her brand new navy design with a cute tan runner hit all the right decor notes.

But Laura admitted that it hadn’t all been smooth-sailing after she was initially quoted an eye-watering amount to transform her stairs.

She explained: “So happy with this budget staircase makeover.

“I used 3.5litres of Farrow and Ball paint, which came to £114, and the treads were £70. So the whole thing came in at under £200.”

Laura added: “Considering I was quoted over £1000 just for a runner, I’d say I’ve done pretty well.”

So how did she achieve the look that saved her over £800?

Laura showed her method to her 22.9k followers, as she said she was thrilled that her previously “scruffy” stairs had been given an upgrade.

She said: “First, I ripped up the manky old carpet – and removed a lot of carpet grippers.

“I took out all of the carpet staples and tacs and then gave the stairs two coats of Farrow and Ball modern eggshell paint in Hague Blue.”

Once the paint was thoroughly dry, Laura set to work on the focal point of the staircase – her DIY runner.

She revealed: “I found these cool stair treads on Amazon for £70 – I’d been quoted £1000 for a carpet so these were fab.

“They were super easy to install, you just stick them on – and here are the finished stairs.”

Laura then showed the staircase from up high, as the camera panned to reveal how she’d added finishing touches, including some floral decoration to the bannister.

And her TikTok followers couldn’t believe how luxe and expensive they looked.
