Fans of Coronation Street have taken aim at the latest storyline involving Evelyn Plummer after she kidnapped a dog from its abusive owner.

ITV viewers have already protested against the dog abuse storyline involving owner Terry Fensley. But on Friday's show (December 8) viewers' opinions turned from distress to annoyance as they began to think it was all becoming a bit too unrealistic.

During the episode, Evelyn had enough of Terry treating his pup badly and decided to take matters into her own hands. Later on in the show, Evelyn took it upon herself to steal Terry's dog from his van.

But Corrie fans weren't buying the far-fetched scene and headed over to X formerly known as Twitter to complain. One viewer said: "Dear #corrie writers. Are you taking the p**s? What the hell is with this dog storyline?! Hardly realistic groundbreaking."

Another viewer penned: "Cute dog but ridiculous storyline." A third said: "Possible complications in nicking someone’s dog in a close-knit community. One of them being the owner will recognise it instantly. Makes no sense."

While another viewer pointed out: "Yet another dog in the programme that gets forgotten about 90% of the time…." While another fan clearly had enough and wrote: "What sick storyline do we have now @itvcorrie poor bloody dog crying & pretend abuse! Do we have to!!!!!"

Although viewers have been unsettled by the dog scenes, Coronation Street has worked closely with the RSPCA tp deliver the story. Producer Iain MacLeod said: "It was hugely important to us to work with the RSPCA on this storyline, both in terms of the accuracy of the on-screen narrative and also the welfare of the animals on set during filming."

He added: "It is a really important story to tell. But it was also vital to make sure it was fun for the actors’ canine co-stars – and as all our behind-the-scenes footage shows, it certainly was!"

A member from the RSPCA also said: "It is really important that animals that are being used are treated kindly, fairly and more importantly that their welfare isn't compromised at any time."
