Although pasta is mainly associated with Italy, most cultures have their own version, so it’s no surprise that people may be more devoted to a particular type.
A post on Twitter has certainly left people feeling rather salty over their pasta of choice after a photo of various types was uploaded, which soon stirred the pot and set off an intense debate.
The image, posted by @wildtiktokss in August, has since amassed over 1.3K comments from unyielding pasta fanatics, with some justifying why particular shapes are unrivalled compared to the rest.
The prickly post includes fourteen pasta shapes up for debate, alongside the caption: ‘What’s the best pasta? Debate.’

The types up for discussion are: penne, elbow, shell, spaghetti, cavatappi, tortellini, rotelle, tagliatelle, ravioli, fusilli, gemelli, farfalle, rigatoni and fettuccini.
From elongated, rope-like shapes to spiral, curved, tubed and more dense textures, each of the fourteen pasta types can be paired in endless ways to create uniquely delicious meals – but not according to some people.
Hundreds of pasta enthusiasts took to the comments to defend their favourite types, with some taking a more objective approach in determining the most versatile of the bunch.
Some revealed tortellini to be their favourite type of pasta, with one person writing, ‘Anything except tortelli is incorrect,’ while another said, ‘Tortellini and ravioli are only acceptable answers.’
Three particular pasta types appeared to take the ultimate top spot among people’s general favourites: farfalle, ravioli and rigatoni.
Tens of individuals expressed their love for farfalle, with one writing, ‘Farfalle. It’s not even close,’ while another exclaimed, ‘Farfalle!!’
Meanwhile, a number of people with a fondness for rigatoni wrote comments such as, ‘2 pints for rigatoni,’ ‘It’s rigatoni by a mile,’ and ‘Rigatoni/penne/farfalle.’
One ravioli fan passionately wrote of the more dense pasta types: ‘Ravioli and it’s no contest. Only thing that comes close is gnocchi.’
Meanwhile, some expressed impartiality when it came to choosing their favourite, and based their love for the carbohydrate based on what sauce each shape was best paired with.
One person wrote, ‘Depends on the sauce you’re having with it,’ while another explained, ‘Fusilli for sauces like Bolognese, penne for creamy sauces and spaghetti when I’m feeling fancy.’

The wholesome pasta choice was likened to the Bridget Jones of pasta – but Kermode urged ravioli lovers to never feel ashamed of their favoured choice.
