Musk 'passed out' during dinner with Russians after drinking vodka
Elon Musk ‘passed out’ during dinner after drinking vodka shots in meeting with Russians to buy $18million rockets – because he was hungover from partying in Paris, new biography claims
- Musk met with Russian businessmen in the early 2000s to discuss the purchase
- He was handed vodka shots with his meal and ‘slammed’ his head into the table
- The Tesla CEO previously spoke of his dislike for alcohol, except red wine
Elon Musk ‘passed out’ during a meeting in Moscow after drinking several shots of vodka over dinner when he was trying to buy multi-million-dollar rockets.
The Tesla and X CEO told author Walter Isaacson in his highly anticipated new biography that he had wanted to launch a mission that would ‘inspire public interest in space exploration’.
He teamed up with rocket engineer Jim Cantrell and Adeo Ressi, his former college housemate and Founder Institute CEO, to arrange a business meeting to negotiate purchasing the rockets.
According to the book, released on September 12, Musk and his colleagues jetted to Moscow in the early 2000s.
But they had a layover in Paris, which included a late night of partying, leaving Musk ‘ragged’.

The trio met with the potential sellers in the back room of a Moscow restaurant, eating ‘small bites of food interspersed with large shots of vodka’, Isaacson wrote.
Musk and his two friends were also gifted a bottle of vodka each, with the label a picture of the recipient on Mars.

Musk’s first plan for space exploration involved sending a greenhouse to Mars, called the ‘Mars Oasis’.
He told the biographer that the ‘weight of the food and the weight of the vodka’ were roughly equal throughout the lunch.
‘Musk, who was holding his head up with his hand, passed out, and his head slammed into the table,’ according to the book.
After the failed meeting, Musk returned to Moscow in early 2002 to try to purchase two Dnepr rockets for $18million.
He was mocked by the Russians, who wanted $18million each for the projectiles, and they said: ‘Oh, little boy, you don’t have the money?’
Musk pushed back on the price, and ultimately left empty handed when they upped the cost to $21million each, according to Cantrell in the book.
Elon Musk, right, poses with French President Emmanuel Macron prior to their talks in May at the Elysee Palace in Paris
In the meeting with the French president the following day, Musk could be seen still wearing what appeared to be his party boots from the previous night
Isaacson, who wrote the biographies of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein, worked with Musk for two years on his book.
In January, Musk claimed that he dislikes the ‘taste or effects of most alcohol’ but admitted that he liked red wine.
He was snapped in 2022 sipping the beverage at the World Cup Final in Qatar, and sipped whiskey with Joe Rogan when he appeared on his podcast in 2018.
In 2017, Musk tweeted: ‘A little red wine, vintage record, some Ambien… and magic!’
It is not the first time that Musk has admitted partying hard before a big meeting, joking that he had to ‘sleep in his car’ after partying in Los Angeles before jetting to Paris to meet the French president.
He was snapped watching Mladen Solomun, a Bosnian-German DJ, along with a 10,000-strong crowd at the historic Exposition Park in May.
Hours later, the billionaire was pictured unshaven and wearing the same boots when he met President Macron.
He is known to be a fan of Electronic Dance Music (EDM), having written and released a track himself in January 2020 entitled ‘Don’t Doubt Your Vibe’.
