Princess Anne ‘led charge’ to evict Harry and Meghan from Windsor cottage
The Princess Royal played an important role in convincing the King that evicting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from Frogmore Cottage was the best decision, according to a new royal book.
Despite the couple moving to California in 2020 with their son, Prince Archie, and later expanding their family when Princess Lilibet was born in 2021, they had kept the four-bed property until earlier this year, when it was returned to the Crown.
And in Omid Scobie's new book Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy's Fight for Survival, the author claims that it was Princess Anne who was a vocal supporter of the approach taken by the Palace to make them leave the property.
It adds that the Duke of Edinburgh was said to have been concerned about the mental wellbeing of the estranged royals.
The book explains how Prince Harry and Meghan received a letter from Sir Michael John Stevens, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, asking them to return the cottage as they were no longer working royals and lived abroad.
The request was met with a strong reaction from Prince Harry, who reportedly asked his father: "You don't want to see your grandchildren any more?".
Princess Anne's alleged contribution to the move has not come as a surprise given her decades of loyal service, her obvious respect for her role and the trusted position she finds herself in as Gold-Stick-in-Waiting to her elder brother.
The unauthorised biography also claims that King Charles ignored a 'meeting request' from his youngest son. Instead, he allegedly instructed an assistant to dismiss him with the excuse of being 'overworked'.
Three weeks after the meeting request was denied, Prince Harry announced his autobiography Spare, which reportedly surprised his father.
Endgame, originally set for an August release, was delayed to include events surrounding the King's Coronation and was published on Tuesday, 28 November.
HarperCollins, the publisher, previously teased that the book will "have the world talking", with author Omid hinting at revealing Royal moments of shame.
Omid, who also wrote the Sussex biography Finding Freedom, includes chapters on Queen Elizabeth II's final days, Prince Andrew's downfall, and a special section on 'man on a mission' Prince Harry.
Harry and Meghan have denied any links to Endgame, rejecting any suggestion that they are “affiliated” to him.
