First Friends cast member speaks out after Matthew Perry’s tragic death
Maggie Wheeler is the first Friends star to pay tribute to late actor Matthew Perry, who passed away on 28 October at his home in Los Angeles.
Matthew, best known for portraying Chandler Bing in the hit US sitcom, died aged 54 after 'drowning in his jacuzzi'. The much-loved actor was discovered unconscious in his Los Angeles home.
Actress Maggie, 62, portrayed Chandler's on-off girlfriend Janice Hosenstein in Friends, appearing in every season of the hit TV show. She shared a photo of her and Matthew on set on Instagram and penned a heartfelt tribute to her late co-star on Sunday.
"What a loss. The world will miss you Mathew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared," Maggie wrote with a red heart emoji.
Tributes from other Friends stars soon followed, with both Paget Brewster and Morgan Fairchild posting messages about Matthew.
Paget, who played Chandler’s girlfriend Kathy in season four of Friends, wrote: “He was lovely to me on Friends and every time I saw him in the decades after. Please read his book. It was his legacy to help. He won’t rest in peace though. He’s already too busy making everyone laugh up there.”
Actress Morgan played Chandler's mother Nora Bing in Friends. She expressed her sorrow on Twitter, writing: "I'm heartbroken about the untimely death of my 'son', Matthew Perry. The loss of such a brilliant young actor is a shock. I'm sending love & condolences to his friends & family, especially his dad, John Bennett Perry, who I worked with on Flamingo Road & Falcon Crest. #RIPMatthew."
Selma Blair, who portrayed Chandler's co-worker Wendy in an episode of Friends, said: "My oldest boy friend. All of us loved Matthew Perry, and I did especially. Every day. I loved him unconditionally. And he me. And I'm broken. Broken hearted. Sweet dreams Matty. Sweet dreams."
The official Friends account on X, formerly known as Twitter, shared: “We are devastated to learn of Matthew Perry’s passing. He was a true gift to us all. Our heart goes out to his family, loved ones, and all of his fans.
Matthew starred in Friends alongside Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Le Blanc and David Schwimmer. The six actors portrayed a friendship group living in New York City.
While Matthew is best known for Friends, he also had success in other acting roles. He appeared in TV shows like Beverly Hills, 90210, Scrubs, The Odd Couple, Growing Pains, and more. He's also starred in films such as The Kid, 17 Again, Fools Rush In, and others.
