The One show chaos as Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith get trapped in lift

Stephen Fry shares health update after suffering a fall

Sheridan Smith and Stephen Fry caused chaos on The One Show today when they got stuck in the lift en route to the show. The pair were due to appear alongside hosts Ronan Keating and Alex Jones to discuss their latest projects.

However, viewers were left confused when no guests appeared on the sofa and instead of an interview video clips were played. When it became obvious that Stephen and Sheridan wouldn’t be joining them anytime soon, the hosts were forced to come clean.

“We are having a night here. Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith are due on this sofa. Obviously, it’s a live programme – they are stuck in the lift,” Alex told viewers at home.

“For the time being we will go on to a film,” she continued as Ronan laughed. However, he did reassure viewers that they were fine.

“Hopefully, they’ll be here before the end of the show,” he said. They then cut to a film featuring Spencer Matthews going for a country hike.

Thankfully, the duo were eventually freed and joined the hosts on the sofa. they both appeared flustered but seemed to see the funny side of the incident.

“Santa’s sleigh ride got a little stuck. I think the reindeer were drunk,” Stephen joked.

“Usually if I get stuck in a lift I assume it’s my weight but this is a goods lift so I don’t know what went wrong,” he said self-deprecatingly.

He then added that they had kept their spirits high which Sheridan agreed with, but they didn’t elaborate further.

Unsurprisingly given the pair’s thespian credentials, viewers felt that this was a drama in the making and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts.

A viewer called @tonypierson2 wrote: “#Theoneshow #Thelift Sheridan Smith and Stephen Fry got stuck in the lift at the one show a new drama is imminent.” (sic)

Someone with the handle @gorbalsgoebbels chimed in: “Scenes as Sheridan Smith is rescued from being trapped in a lift with polymath Stephen Fry… or is it the other way round? #TheOneShow #ThisTime.” (sic)

@bejokex commented: “Stephen Fry is stuck in a lift at the BBC with Sheridan Smith. This drama writes itself #TheOneShow.”

Meanwhile, @thewayitchris quipped: “I’m looking forward to the 3 part drama on ITV about the time Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith got stuck in a lift. Sheridan Smith being played by…Sheridan Smith. #theoneshow.”

The One Show airs on weeknights at 7pm on BBC One.
