Meanwhile, Mr Rolfe is a sailing enthusiast whose old yacht was once blown up for a magazine feature.<\/p>\n<p>The chief executive has seen his pay double despite NATS admitting in its annual report it relies on \u2018ageing systems\u2019 beyond their \u2018use by\u2019 date.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/22\/74893725-12463183-Martin_Rolfe_pictured_51_his_firefighter_wife_Anna_and_their_son-m-50_1693431485829.jpg\" height=\"489\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Martin Rolfe (pictured), 51, his firefighter wife, Anna, and their son enjoy all the trappings that come with the \u00a31.3 million he took home this year<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/22\/74893727-12463183-He_enjoys_sprawling_gardens_complete_with_tennis_courts_and_a_sw-m-52_1693431524015.jpg\" height=\"420\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>He enjoys sprawling gardens complete with tennis courts and a swimming pool at his \u00a32 million Hampshire mansion<\/p>\n<p>On top of his \u00a3477,000 basic salary, he received a \u00a3281,000 annual bonus, pensions benefits and a backdated \u00a3555,000 long-term incentive plan this year.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0Stranded Britons are being denied compensation despite having to sleep on beds laid out on airport floors\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>It comes after the company stood by a huge \u00a31.2 million bonus it owed Mr Rolfe last year while running a cost-cutting regime to save money after Covid.<\/p>\n<p>He took over as CEO after a similar glitch under his predecessor led to the cancellation and delay of hundreds of flights.<\/p>\n<p>NATS insisted at the time Richard Deakin\u2019s replacement was nothing to do with the computer malfunction before Christmas in 2014 but it may give his successor pause for thought.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Rolfe is an aviation veteran who studied aerospace systems engineering at the University of Southampton at the same time his future wife was reading electrotechnical engineering there.<\/p>\n<p>They both went on to work for the American aerospace firm Lockheed Martin, where he worked as director of aviation programmes before becoming managing director.<\/p>\n<p>He switched to take up the same role at NATS in 2012 before gaining his promotion to the top job in 2015.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/22\/74894079-12463183-image-a-53_1693431541536.jpg\" height=\"424\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Holidaymakers joined the long queues in the hope of getting checked in at Palma Airport<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile his wife stayed at Lockheed Martin before becoming a firefighter for Hampshire Fire and Rescue after having their son.<\/p>\n<p>Away from work, Mr Rolfe enjoys sailing trips around Europe.
