‘Tone deaf’ Meghan could learn from Kate Middleton’s ‘power move’, says expert

Kate Middleton wore a £21 outfit from Zara during an outing to University College London this week, which led royal experts to compare her savvy 'power move' to Meghan Markle's 'tone deaf' outfits.

With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle still trying to reinvent their image after leaving the royal family, some experts have even noted that Meghan could learn from the Duchess of Cambridge's surprisingly economical outfit.

The Duchess of Sussex has been criticised for wearing clothes and jewellery that costs more than the median house price in the US. For many, the expensive outfits she wears while championing various charities feel 'tone deaf'.

For example, in her recent Time Magazine cover, the duchess wore an estimated $528,000 worth of jewellery, including a $31,000 heirloom gold watch, a $9400 Cartier bracelet and even a mysterious diamond pinky ring, according to news.com.au. Meanwhile, the median house price in the US is significantly lower at $406,000.

Royal expert Daniela Elser praised Kate for her uncanny fashion choices, which turned something boring into a power move.

Daniela said: "The more the razzle-dazzle of the shiny Sussex circus, the more it takes the attention off whatever genuinely worthwhile thing that Harry and Meghan are trying to do.

"When Kate turned up in London this week wearing the sartorial equivalent of a sleeping tablet, she was depriving the attendant media and press coverage of being able to focus on anything but the reason she was there."

In fact, the Duchess of Cambridge has worn this outfit before. Everything from the houndstooth dress to the grey embossed Hugo Boss heels and Mappin and Webb diamond drop earrings are parts of outfits that she has donned before, which add to the charm.

Daniela notes that if Meghan had done something similar and recycled her previous outfits or even wear something affordable from a sustainable brand, it would send the signal that the Sussexes are here to work, not to generate buzz around their outfits.

Meghan Markle has previously used this tactic. During a hugely successful tour of southern Africa in 2019, the Duchess of Sussex wore outfits that were extremely fashionable but also very affordable.

By sticking to affordable brands like Banana Republic and J Crew, Meghan ensured that the focus was on the causes she was there to champion.
