The first debate between President Trump and Joe Biden on Tuesday night immediately sparked an onslaught of gripes — and jokes — on social media.
Twitter users both stewed over and poked fun at everything from the format and moderator to crosstalk between the septuagenarian candidates and the schoolyard jibes they exchanged.
“I’d love to know how many people turned off this debate after the first 15 minutes,” asked Cook Political Report editor Amy Walter.
“This is an abysmal way to select the leader of the free world,” tweeted NBC correspondent Garrett Haake.
Asked @MiekeEoyang: “Can we send in the national guard to restore order to this debate?”
Pro-gamer @LiquidHBox posted an image of someone pulling off their headphones while grimacing with the caption: “When you listen to this debate for longer than 30 seconds.”
CNN Senior Washington Correspondent Jeff Zeleny posed the question: “The debate is at the halfway point. Times flies when you’re _________.”
Responses including GIFs of people pulling their hair out or covering their eyes, as well as comments like: “Passed out from banging your head against the wall.”
One Twitter user posted an image from “The Simpsons” he said summed up the event — showing a newspaper article with the headline “Old man yells at old man.”
In the same vein, musician @Drebae_ tweeted a video of two elderly men brawling with each other with the caption: “Trump & Biden during this entire debate.”
