Princess Diana smiles in never-before-seen bikini snap on yacht with pals

Never-before-seen pictures of Princess Diana have surfaced showing the bikini-clad royal enjoying a day out on a yacht.

The photos, which were taken in 1990, have only just been unearthed more than 20 years since her tragic death.

Princess Diana can be seen looking relaxed and smiling as she enjoys the sun with her fashion designer pals.

The pics were taken just two years before her separation from Prince Charles, aboard the Valentino private yacht, T.M.Blue One.

They were shared on Instagram by Valentino co-founder Giancarlo Giammetti, who also appears in the pictures alongside Kyril, Prince of Preslav.

Giammetti captioned the images: “And here two moments of friendship with her #princess Diana.”

Diana's yacht appearance came just nine years after her wedding to the Prince of Wales.

There were reports of their relationship being on the rocks, and she was rumoured to have had an affair with Household Cavalry officer James Hewitt, which is thought to have ended by the time these pictures were taken.

She had also been in a relationship with her bodyguard Barry Mannakee. He was killed in a crash in 1987.

And while her marriage fell apart she is believed to have been battling bulimia – two incredibly personal struggles with Netflix's The Crown depicted in the hit show's season four, which has just aired.

During this time, Charles had rekindled his relationship with former girlfriend and now wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

Diana and Charles finalised their divorce in 1996, having initially split in 1992.

In these newly-surfaced images, the small island of Stromboli off the north coast of Sicily can be seen in the background.

Other images shared by Giammetti show Diana with Prince Kyril's then wife, Rosario Saxe-Coburg, a former model with Valentino.

Diana famously enjoyed spending time on yachts, as she felt they allowed her privacy to relax and unwind.

But she could not avoid the glare of the paparazzi on her final holiday before her death, as she was snapped kissing Dodi Fayed on his dad's yacth, Cujo, in July 1997.

The pair were killed in a crash in a Paris tunnel on August 31 of that year

The new pictures have surfaced amid controversy surrounding the late princess regarding her BBC Panorama interview which was aired five years after these pictures were taken.

Earl Spencer has slammed the current set-up of an official inquiry into the controversy surrounding Panorama's bombshell interview with his sister.

He has previously alleged he was shown "false bank statements" by interviewer Martin Bashir ahead of the interview, and these were used to help the reporter gain access to the princess.

Interest in the royals has heightened since the latest season of The Crown aired earlier this month, sparking backlash against the portrayal of Prince Charles and wife Camilla.

The show focuses on the lives of the royals, with a close look at the infamous love triangle Diana was involved in.

But it is a work of fiction based on reality and there are reports the Royal Family is angered by their portrayal.

A royal expert hit out at people casting Camilla as the "villain" in Princess Diana's tragic marriage with Prince Charles.

Britani Barger, the deputy editor of Royal Central, said the Duchess of Cornwall should not be thought of as the "other woman" and it's "past time for that narrative to stop."
