Playboy model with same devastating disease as Justin Bieber becomes bikini star

A Playboy model who suffers from the same devastating disease at Justin Bieber has spoken about how she used the illness as motivation to become a bikini champion.

Nadine Kerastas, 36, refused to let Lyme's disease ruin her life and went on to become a successful fitness competitor with more than 1.6m Instagram followers.

She's speaking out about her difficult journey after pop star Bieber revealed he's also battling the disease , which he's due to talk about for the first time in a documentary later this month.

Nadine, who lives in Germany, didn't tell anyone she was in agonising pain every single day as she competed and won a number of International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness competitions.

Since leaving her fitness competing days behind, Nadine has achieved her lifelong goal to be featured on Playboy Magazine’s front cover, and has also posed for FHM, Flex and Muscle Fitness – and she regularly post skimpy lingerie and swimsuit snaps on Instagram.

Nadine got the disease after being bitten by a tick while playing with her dogs outside in her garden.

She noticed the wound started to swell and become red over the next few weeks, but she didn’t think much of it.

Six months later, Nadine woke up in the morning and felt excruciating pain all over her body and couldn’t feel her legs.

She said: “In the summer I was playing with my two dogs outside in my garden, I saw the tick bite later and immediately removed it. I didn’t think about it any further.

“It was a little bit red and swollen but I thought its normal and didn’t give it anymore thought.

“I didn’t go to the doctor right after the tick bite. I lived a totally normal life until six months later.

“I woke up and I had a lot of pain everywhere in my body, I couldn’t feel my legs and didn’t know what happened.”

She eventually went to the doctor and was soon diagnosed with Lyme disease, undergoing excruciating treatment and had to take three different antibiotics everyday.

Nadine said: “I started a doctor marathon and one doctor found out I had Lyme disease.

“I was so shocked and sad about it, yes I had a tick bite but I never thought that it could make me so sick.

“My whole body felt numb and extremely painful. You cannot describe this feeling.

“I got a very strong medications that made me feel so bad. In the end I was given three sets of antibiotics to get rid of it.

“I had to vomit every day, I felt so bad.”

Nadine’s doctor advised her to take up sports to distract her from the pain, so she decided to immerse herself in weightlifting.

Her passion for fitness grew and she even began competing in various fitness competitions, following a rigorous diet and training routine.

She used her illness as motivation, and soon became a successful IFBB bikini athlete with several trophies under her belt.

She said: "And that was the point my doctor gave me the tip to do more sports activities, so I don’t concentrate only on my pain and distract myself from it.

"At this point you can only do two things, give up or fight. I decided to fight.

“It was the hardest time in my life but what doesn't kill you just makes you stronger.

“This time has shaped me incredibly. And it’s probably the reason why I have become such a fighter in all situations of life, including in my business.

“I won the fight against this insidious disease and even became a very successful IFBB Bikini Athlete who finally made it as a Playmate and was featured in a lot of magazines. And all because I was so sick.”

Nadine went from earning €3,000 per month as an office assistant to earning up to €50,000 a day from her social media accounts and her online business.

After two years of suffering, Nadine managed to beat her illness but warned Lyme disease can last for life if not treated promptly.

She said: “People who have never experienced with something like this cannot understand how painful this disease is. Sometimes people said to me: ‘Hey it´s just a tick bite!’

“Words like this makes me really sad and angry – no it isn’t just a tick bite. It’s a very insidious disease that you should never underestimate!

“And that’s exactly what I want to warn and educate about it. When you have a tick bite and see a red circle around the bite, please go to the doctor immediately.

“The sooner the disease is recognized, the faster you can be helped.Having gone through the disease itself, Nadine sympathised with Justin Bieber and lashed out at critics who judged his appearance not realising he was battling the illness from behind closed doors.

She said: "People thought Justin Bieber was on drugs because he looked so bad, his skin changed etc. “I can feel him, I know exactly what he's going through.

"I hope the doctors can help him ASAP and he doesn’t get Chronic Lyme Disease."
