Partner of missing hiker slams ‘wild theories’ about disappearance

Claims a missing hiker and her boyfriend were "not as happy as images suggest" have been dismissed as "wild theories and speculation".

A French cop has claimed there were "tensions" in the relationship between travel blogger Esther Dingley and partner Dan Colegate.

She was last seen on November 22 on Pic de Sauveguarde in the Pyrennees after they had been travelling together for six years.

According to the Mirror Mr Colegate, 38, revealed to friends a claim they had disagread about continuing their life on the road was a "wild theory".

Miss Dingley, 37, was making a solo trek when she disappeared and French and Spanish police have been trying to piece together what happened to the former personal training business owner.

A spokesman for the family dismissed claims from French police Captaine Jean-Marc Bordinaro their life was not as "happy as pictures on social media suggest".

Cops are looking into the possibility the missing woman may have been planning a new life. The family's spokesman Matthew Searle said: "We can confirm that there is no indication whatsoever of any breakdown in Dan and Esther's relationship. There is now sign of any wishes to seeks a new life. there are many wild theories and speculation at the moment."

Mr Colegate reported his partner of 18 years missing on November 25 after she failed to arrive at the town of Benasque in Spain. He has been quizzed three times by police but as a witness, not a suspect – and police accept his movement s are covered.

Capt Bordinaro said: "We went to see Mr Colegate so we could go through social media with him. It appears their lives together were not as happy as social media suggest.

"Esther Dingley wanted to continue with her current way of life, journeys in a camper van and sporting activities including hiking, whilst Daniel Colegate seems a little tired of this nomadic life.

"Did [she] want to go off on her own to live her life and organise her own disappearance? There’s nothing enabling us to eliminate this working theory. This situation provoked some tensions within the couple, but nothing too much."

Family spokesman Matthew represents LBT Global, which supports loved ones of people missing abroad. He added: "We urge an end to such speculation as it is unhelpful and indeed unfair on those close to Esther. LBT Global will be releasing a statement from Daniel early next week."

Miss Dingley had parked her camper van in Benasque, northern Spain – then hitched to Pic de Sauvegarde. She was seen by fellow hikers on November 22, when she also sent a final photo to Mr Colegate from the mountain top – a solar panel and communications mast reflected in her sunglasses.

It is thought she was last seen by Spanish Olympic skier Marti Vigo del Arco, who passed her as he and his girlfriend headed down the peak.

The couple lived in Framwellgate Moor, Durham, where she ran a personal training firm and Mr Colegate was a business development manager. But they gave up their jobs to tour Europe after he had suffered health issues and she was diagnosed with depression.
