President Biden still has not set a date to address a joint session of Congress, the White House said Wednesday.
”There’s no update yet. We have a speech coming up next week, and we certainly remain interested in committing to doing a joint session. We remain engaged with them, but I don’t have an update on the specific timing,” press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at the daily briefing.
Biden will hold his first solo news conference on Thursday — 64 days into his administration.
Psaki had previously said the president was concentrating on getting his $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus plan through Congress before turning his focus to the speech.
But the relief package passed the Senate on March 8 without any Republican votes, raising questions about Biden’s vow to pursue bipartisanship.
Presidents typically make their initial address to Congress in the first few weeks after entering the White House, but it is not called a “State of the Union” speech, which comes in the second year of the term.
