Mum discovers husband killed secret fiancée days before he was due to marry her

A woman was horrified to learn her husband of 23 years was living a secret double life when he was arrested for murdering his secret fiancée days before he was due to marry her.

Mum-of-two Melanie Addie said her “mind was boggled” when police showed up to her house and told her that her husband James Addie, 56, was engaged to someone else and was being arrested for her murder.

It turns out that James had been cheating on Melanie for more than seven years with a woman named Molly Watson, aged 35.

Molly’s body was found outside of her car in Monroe County, Missouri, USA, on April 27, 2018, just three days before she was due to marry James.

There was a single gunshot wound to the back of her heard and the police arrested James for her murder. Two weeks after the shocking arrest, Melanie filed for divorce.

Addie was convicted of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. In July last year he was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 10 years.

Speaking to 20/20, an investigative news programme, in a new special about the murder, Melanie said: “It was just mind-boggling. It made no sense at all.

"It didn’t seem right. This was not my life.”

Melanie revealed that James had always been “selfish, controlling and intimidating” throughout their marriage but she never suspected he was being cheating on her and capable of murder.

She said: “He would get off work at 3pm… and usually he would get home at 5 and I would say: ‘Why are you always so late?’

"That would be an argument. He didn’t want to tell me anything.”

Melanie later discovered he actually took two trips with Molly without her knowledge when she found photos of them together on holiday in their garage.

On the day of Molly’s death, the killer “seemed like he always did," Melanie said.

He came back after Melanie had fallen asleep but in the middle of the night, the shocked mum was awoken by a loud knock on the door from the police.

During Addie’s trial, prosecutors claimed that he had told Molly that Melanie was his ex-wife and that she had died in a car accident. They believed he killed her because she found out he was lying.

“Forensic searches of Molly’s phones indicated that the day before she was murdered, she was looking for Melanie Addie’s obituary,” prosecutor Talley Smith said.

Melanie visited Addie in prison a week after he was arrested.

She suggested that James “was very sorry for the affair" but he insists that he was not the killer.
