Man has stash of 3,500 bricks after starting bizarre collection nine years ago – The Sun

MADCAP Mark Cranston puts another brick in the wall — building on his stash of 3,500.

The ex-police sergeant, 56, started his bizarre collection nine years ago while seeking a doorstop.

He grew fascinated by the history of brick marks and is now looking for more space after filling his shed. Dad-of-two Mark said: “Each brick tells a story. It takes up a lot of time but it’s a passion.”

His collection includes a fire brick from ship SS Politician which sank in 1941 while carrying 264,000 bottles of whisky, inspiring the film Whisky Galore! He has a drainage tile dating to 1833 and a brick from the execution block at Glasgow’s HMP Barlinnie.

Mark, of Jedburgh, Scottish Borders, monitors buildings due for demolition and gets tip-offs from an online database he set up for enthusiasts.

He has been helped by son Jonathon, 28, and daughter Hannah, 30 — adding: “My wife tolerates my hobby and has been on ‘hunts’.

“We have more than 3,000 Scottish marks and 450 foreign. The aim is a museum. Everything else like pottery, glass and iron goes on display — but not the humble brick.”
