What is strawberry legs? 

Strawberry legs is an umbrella term for skin issues that make tiny red or brown dots appears on our legs.

However, it can also appear on the upper arms, cheeks, back, and butt.

Dermatologist Anna Karp, M.D., explained to HelloGiggles: "When the hair follicles get clogged with keratin (dead skin cells), they can appear darker and raised on the skin, making your legs look like a strawberry."

When clogged pores or hair follicles, also known as comedones are closed they are called blackheads.

However, when these are opened the oil mixes with the air, oxidizes and turns black.

What causes strawberry legs? 

Strawberry legs can be caused by several different skin issues.

Shaving

Shaving can open hair follicles, exposing dirt, oil, and dead skin cells to air. 

Strawberry skin can also be caused by dry shaving or using a dull razor.

Folliculitis

Folliculitis is when the hair follicles in your skin become infected and it can also resemble strawberry legs.

It can be caused by shaving, waxing, wearing tight clothing, or rubbing the skin.

Clogged Pores

Clogged pores naturally produce more oil – and when these pores are opened they turn black as they mix with the air.

This causes legs to be covered in little black dots – resembling strawberry legs.

Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis Pilaris is a skin condition that sees tiny red bumps cover the skin.

The condition that usually appears on the upper arms and thighs is also known as chicken skin and resembles goosebumps.

When they cover the thighs they look like strawberry skin.

It is a genetic condition and does not usually require treatment.

How do I get rid of strawberry legs?

  1. Swap out your razors

Old or dull razors can easily cause strawberry legs because of razor burn and folliculitis.

Buying new razors is a great first step to stop it from recurring.

  1. Use shaving cream and exfoliate

Using a shaving cream can stop skin irritation and will prevent irritation.

Exfoliating means dead skin cells will be less likely to clog pores.

  1. Moisturise

Moisturising will prevent dry skin and irritation – especially after shaving.

  1. Shave with the grain

Only shave in the direction of your hair growth. 

This prevents irritation and can prevent strawberry legs and razor burn.

  1. Consider laser therapy

Laser therapy is long term and delivers small amounts of radiation to hair follicles.
