Horrific moment crew member shot dead while filming TV show ‘Cops’ released
Horrific footage has been released showing showing the moment a TV sound man was accidentally shot dead while filming the reality show ‘Cops’.
Bryce Dion, 38, was holding a microphone during the filming of a shootout between officers in Omaha, Nebraska and an armed robber at a branch of the restaurant Wendys.
He was wearing a bulletproof vest but was hit where there was a gap under his arm.
Dion’s brother has filed a wrongful death lawsuit over the incident in August 2014.
Last night, a court released video of what happened for the first time.
After the shooting, it shows Dion slumped on the floor of the entrance to the restaurant.
His death certificate said he survived for up to 20 minutes after he was shot.
An officer is heard telling Dion: "Stay with me… stay with me."
The thief, Cortez Washington, also died in the incident, in which officers fired an estimated 30 shots.
The show is screened on television in the UK on Sky’s FX channel.
Police later discovered the suspect, who was on parole, was actually carrying an air rifle which only looks like a firearm.
The tragedy occurred as police patrol cars responded to a call for backup after the raid.
In an audio of the police radio call one cop is heard describing a suspect in a “black hoodie and a white bandana”.
An officer can then be heard saying: “We have one of the ‘Cops’ guys has been hit by gunfire; we need a squad here now.”
Another cop then urges: “We need multiple squads, two squads."
A spokesman for the show said at the time: “We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragedy, and our main concern is helping his family in any way we can.
“Bryce Dion was a long-term member of the Cops team and a very talented and dedicated person.
“We mourn his passing. An investigation is ongoing and we are cooperating with local authorities.”
