Holocaust Remembrance Day 2019: What is the Holocaust Memorial Day? How is it marked?

This is different to the Gregorian calendar which is commonly used today.

In the Gregorian calendar this will be either April or May, but the individual dates will vary.

For example, if the 27th day of Nisan is supposed to be a Friday, Yom HaShoah is moved to Thursday, andif it is a Sunday it will be switched to a Monday.

If the day clashes with the Jewish sabbath it also needs to be adjusted.

How is Yom HaShoah marked?

On Yom HaShoah memorial services are held across the whole world.

In Jerusalem there is a national ceremony being held at Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial.

There will also be a siren for two minutes across the country.

From sundown to sundown people all over the world will light candles and say prayers in memory of those who died in the Holocaust.

The survivors of the horrific event will also speak.

In London a candle lighting ceremony will be held at the Jewish Museum.
