A young boy was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver about a block from his Queens home Saturday afternoon, police said.
Giovani Ampuero, 9, was walking with his mother on 70th Street near Northern Boulevard in Jackson Heights when he was slammed by a driver in a Jeep Compass.
The driver of the Jeep, who police said is in his 80s, struck Ampuero as he was turning left onto Northern Boulevard from 70th Street at about 1:30 p.m.
The driver took off, but was stopped by police a short distance away, authorities said. He was taken into custody and charges are pending, police said.
Ampuero was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital and declared dead, police said.
