It comes after his son Casey died playing football with friends in 2011 when a metal goalpost fell on his back, crushing him.

Cousin Ffion James, 20, said ‘cheeky and bubbly’ Casey got his foot stuck in the goal netting and it fell on top of him as he tried to free himself.

‘It was a metal one and it landed on his back so he was flat on his stomach on the floor’, she told Wales Online.

‘He was with a couple of his mates and they were only around 11 or 12 at the time. The goal post was that heavy that they couldn’t lift it off him.’

Paramedics and the Welsh Air Ambulance were called to the scene and took Casey to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

James added: ‘He always had a smile on his face. If you saw him he would put his thumbs up. That’s the thing he would always do’.

Tragically, two years later Nick’s daughter Kelly was killed in a car crash on a rural B-road.

James said the death of her cousin, who grew up with Casey in Clatter, Powys, was a ‘massive shock’ to the family.

She said the family were rallying around Nick’s wife Shan and his daughters Laura and Natasha.

Speaking about Nick’s sudden death in August 2020, James said: ‘It was a complete shock.

‘He just had a bit of what he thought was indigestion, a tight chest. He was working at the time and didn’t feel right and he ended up being taken into hospital by ambulance.

‘We had a phone call saying things aren’t looking good and he was in hospital and probably an hour later we had a phone call saying he’d passed away from a blood clot on the lung

‘He was fine, you wouldn’t know any different really.’

James has since raised over £3,000 for the Welsh Air Ambulance and Alder Hay Children’s Hospital in Liverpool in memory of her loved ones.

She is now hoping to raise £5,000 for the two causes and plans to do a charity skydive in the summer.
