The former prostitute shot to fame in the ’90s due to her association with Hugh Grant, at the time one of Hollywood’s biggest heartthrobs

It was the second time she’d been seen out and about in Atlanta this week, as she was spotted smoking a cigarette and making a phone call on Monday.

She said in the years that followed that the $50 ‘trick’ in Grant’s car on Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard made Brown a millionaire.

But earlier this year, Brown was charged with battery, cruelty to children, possession of drugs and smuggling suspected cocaine into a jail, according to Fulton County arrest records, and faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

A close neighbor in the south Atlanta estate where she now lives told The Mirror that Brown has fallen a long way since she became an overnight star.

She is reported to have earned around $1.6 million from the publicity she received from her arrest with Grant, remaining in the public eye through work in the adult film industry, TV appearances and interviews with newspapers.

While Brown would rather have everyone thinking of her as someone who lives a glamorous lifestyle, ‘she has no car, and the shoes she steps out in are nasty old flip-flops,’ the neighbor said, adding the phrase ‘red shoes and no knickers’ sums the 53-year-old.

‘Divine has been in and out of trouble all her adult life. There is constant shouting coming from her home, mostly when she is drunk. It seems her choices may finally be catching up to her,’ the neighbor told the newspaper.

On Valentine’s day, police were called to Brown’s apartment around midday, where she was arrested under her real name. She appeared drunk with ‘very slurred speech,’ according to reports at the time.

There, officers found her 13-year-old alleged victim, who told police she had been hit. The Mirror said the police report alleged Brown had been ‘grabbing her by her arm, throwing her around the apartment, slamming her on the couch’.

The teenager told officers Divine had been under the influence ‘alcohol or something because she has seen her pop pills before,’ the Mirror added.

While the girl was taken to hospital, Brown was taken to Fulton County Jail. There, officers found she had suspected cocaine hidden inside her body.

Grant is shown in a photo shot off video monitor during a taping of the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” at the NBC studios in Burbank, California July 10. The first question Leno asked Grant was “What the hell were you thinking?”

Records show the case is still open, and being found guilty of unlawful possession of drugs can fetch 30 years in prison. Meanwhile, a first-degree cruelty to children conviction in the state of Georgia can result in 20 years.

Brown and Grant were both arrested on June 27, 1995, for engaging in a sexual act in public. Officers were drawn to Grant’s car because they noticed his brake lights were flashing on and off, as the drive was pushing his foot down on the pedal.

Both were arrested and pleaded no contest to offences, resulting in fines.

Brown made a fortune following the arrest, due to the attention the case gained thanks to Grant’s stardom. ‘That was the trick that changed my life,’ she said.

Since then, she has said the incident allowed her to put her children through private school. Her and her then-partner bought a four-bedroom home in Beverly Hills.

Grant has admitted he cheated on Elizabeth Hurley with Brown in 1995 because he was upset after watching one of his own movies.

The actor, 60, hit headlines when police arrested him and sex worker Divine after nabbing their illicit liaison in a car parked near Los Angeles’ Sunset Boulevard.

And in a new interview on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, the British star admitted that his unease after watching his Hollywood debut film Nine Months led to the incident.

Recalling the headline-making scandal, he said: ‘I was about to launch my first Hollywood film – my timing was impeccable. My problem was – that was my first Hollywood film and I’d just been to see it.

‘The film was about to come out a week or two after that, and I had a bad feeling about it. I went to see a screening. Everyone in it was brilliant, but I was so atrocious that I was not in a good frame of mind.’

With his mood worsening as he questioned his own performance in the romantic comedy – which also starred Julianne Moore and Robin Williams – Hugh revealed he went to down his sorrows, before ‘one thing led to another’.

He said: ‘I had a Ken Russell kind of lunch – and one thing led to another. I just was disappointed in myself. I don’t know what was going on. It was called Nine Months.’
