Anthony Fauci apologises for comments on UK vaccine process
Dr Fauci is a leading member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force and the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He says the US could see another surge after Christmas as the nation experiences peak infections of close to 200,000 a day on average.
The US has the highest number of cases – 14.9 million infections – and deaths – 283,503 – from coronavirus worldwide, according to research by Johns Hopkins University.
Dr Fauci said his concerns about Christmas “may be even more compounded” than Thanksgiving “because it’s a longer holiday”.
He told CNN: “With Thanksgiving it was just the end of the week and then you go back to work the next week.
“With Christmas it starts several days before, it goes through Christmas, the week after Christmas into New Year’s and the New Year’s holiday.

“I think it could be even more of a challenge than what we saw with Thanksgiving.
“So I hope people realise that and understand that as difficult as this is, nobody wants to modify, if not essentially shut down their holiday season, but we are in a very critical time in this country right now.
“We’ve got to not walk away from the facts and the data.
“This is tough going for all of us.”
Millions of Americans ignored warnings to stay at home and limit holiday gatherings over Thanksgiving weekend, starting on November 26.
California alone has experienced 1.38 million cases of coronavirus and 19,966 deaths.
A new strict lockdown has been imposed on the west coast state for at least three weeks.
It includes bans on restaurant dining and private gatherings and affects around 85 percent of the state’s 40 million population.

On Monday, Moncef Slaoui, the scientist in charge of the US push for a Covid-19 vaccine, says a “light at the end of the tunnel” has emerged in the pandemic.
Dr Moncef Slaoui said he hoped the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could greenlight a vaccine this week.
It is expected to be made available to health care workers and elderly care home residents at first.
Dr Slaoui told CBS: “I think we may start to see some impact on the most susceptible people probably in the month of January and February.
“But on a population basis, for our lives to start getting back to normal, we’re talking about April or May.
“Therefore, it’s absolutely vital that everybody take comfort in the fact that we have light at the end of the tunnel, and find the energy in that to continue to wear our masks, distance, wash our hands… to make sure we’re there by the spring to benefit from the vaccine.”
