Daughter of millionaire linked to Putin dies in fall from 15th-floor bedroom

The teen daughter of a multi-millionaire linked to Vladimir Putin has been found dead after falling from her 15th-floor home.

The body of 19-year-old Valeria Shpilenko was recovered after she died in a "tragic accident" after falling from her bedroom window in Moscow.

The authorities in Russia are investigating.

Her dad Andrey Shpilenko, 45, was formerly an MP and high-flying official in United Russia, the political party formed as Putin's vehicle for power.

He is now boss of a network of "techno parks" around Russia, seen by the Kremlin as vital to the economy.

Mr Shpilenko rejected claims there was anything "criminal" over his daughter's death on Thursday, the day after her birthday.

He said: "It's now a very difficult period for me and my family.

“In order to avoid spreading false information, I am forced to publish this message. I see how some media outlets are trying to misinterpret information, present it as something distorted and hint at a criminal nature.”

He said his daughter's death was "due to an accident" but did not give any further details.

Police sources said a preliminary examination found "no traces of a struggle" but an investigation is continuing.

No suicide note was found and Valeria's friends said she showed no signs of being suicidal.

Her dad posted online: "My angel, my beloved daughter, rest with God. You will live in my heart forever."

He and his wife Alyona were described as "deeply shocked".

Valeria was an international journalism student in Moscow, who was known to be keen on photography.

She had a younger brother, 13-year-old Ilya.

Her dad was earlier vice-rector of the Moscow State University of Technology and Management.
