Doctors have warned coronavirus may cause fertility problems for men and cause swelling and pain in the testicles, it has been reported.
While a loss of taste or smell, a fever, and a new and persistent dry cough have been widely reported as typical symptoms of the deadly Covid-19 virus, doctors in the US have now suggested testicular pain could be a symptom too.
The warning comes after a 37-year-old patient was taken to hospital for emergency treatment after experiencing swelling and discomfort in his scrotum.
He had already been exhibiting signs of coronavirus due to a cough and fever which had persisted for a week before he was rushed to hospital.
Upon examination, doctors at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium in Texas claimed coronavirus had also damaged the patients spermatocytes – a cell production stage of making sperm.
The medics warned the damage caused by the Covid-19 virus could have “a future impact on male fertility”/
The MailOnline reports the case could be the first piece of evidence directly linking coronavirus with testicular pain after other patients had also complained of pain in their testicles.
But there has not yet been research in to a connection.

Doctors treating the patient believe the virus entered the body using ACE2 receptors on Leydig cells, which are present in the testes – fuelling speculation coronavirus could be spread through sex.
Writing in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine the doctors noted that testicular pain symptoms have been rare.
However, they added testicular pain could help “identify this disease at the earliest junction and trigger appropriate treatment, quarantine, and fertility follow-up”.
The patient spent one night in hospital, was prescribed pain killers and a week of antibiotics, however the research didn't reveal if this helped his situation.
The case comes as research suggests coronavirus could be spread through sex.
Scientists in China analysed semen from 38 men who had tested positive for the Covid-19 virus – with some of the patients still infectious, while others from the research group had recovered.
One in six were recorded to have traces of coronavirus in their semen – including some of those who had recovered from the virus.
The study has fallen short of stating the virus can be transmitted via sex and only raised the possibility of this being the case.
Other viruses, including Ebola and Zika, have been known to be found in semen samples in past.
