A man was shot dead by officers after he stabbed a police dog to death and wounded a cop.
The incident was sparked when a member of the public in Seattle, Washington, called 911 when they saw a knife-wielding man trying to break into their home at around 3pm on Wednesday.
Officers responded with a K9 unit and a police dog “engaged with the suspect,” who then fatally stabbed the dog, and injured a human officer during a struggle, reports suggested.
ABC reported that the officer was stabbed in the face and was treated on-site, and that the suspect died at the scene.
A second human officer then shot the man dead, police said in a statement.
The man’s name was not released Wednesday night and the incident was under investigation, the New York Post reported.
Police also aid they would release video footage of the deadly encounter within 72 hours, as per department policy.
The residents of the home were not physically injured, Assistant Chief Tom Mahaffey said.
The shooting will be investigated by the Force Investigation Team, the Seattle Police Department said.
