Three NYPD cops responding to the scene of an overturned box truck on the Upper East Side early Monday were injured when a taxi struck two of them and then hit a squad car occupied by the third officer, police said.
The officers had arrived at the intersection of East 59th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan after a bakery box truck flipped over just after 5 a.m., authorities said.
Two of the officers, who were on foot, were hit by the taxi as it switched lanes nearby the crash site, which was just steps from Bloomingdale’s flagship store, police said. They suffered leg injuries.
The taxi also struck an NYPD patrol car, causing the officer inside to sustain neck pain, according to cops.
The trio of cops was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition with minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck for Carousel Cakes — a decades-old family-owned bakery in Nanuet, NY — was also injured from the single-vehicle crash and taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition, officials said.
“The driver is in the hospital, and he’s OK … a few injuries, but nothing serious,” said Carousel Cakes owner David Finkelstein. “He’s a solid driver and I don’t believe it was his fault.”
It was not immediately clear how the six-wheel truck came to overturn on Third Avenue.
