Colorado Rapids welcome back winger Sam Nicholson as Scotsman signs deal through 2024 – The Denver Post

The Colorado Rapids are welcoming back a familiar face and fan-favorite into the Burgundy fold again.

On Friday, Sam Nicholson signed with the team on a two-and-a-half year deal through 2024 with a club option for 2025.

The 27-year-old winger signed with Colorado as a free agent and most recently played for Bristol Rovers, a club which was promoted back to English Football League One at the end its season in May. Nicholson, a Scotsman, will return to Colorado for the second time in his career after he initially played for the Burgundy Boys for three seasons from 2018-2020.

“We’re delighted to welcome Sam back to the club,” Colorado Rapids general manager Pádraig Smith said in a club statement. “Sam is an incredibly talented and versatile attacker with exceptional pace and someone our team and coaching staff are very familiar with from his time with the club. We’re excited to welcome him back at this key juncture in the season and look forward to seeing him continue his career in Burgundy.”

In his most recent stint in England, Nicholson made 75 appearances across all competitions including 40 last season for “The Gas.” He scored 14 goals, six of which were in 2021-’22, and added eight assists during that time period.

During his first stretch in Colorado, Nicholson scored four goals and chipped in six assists in 48 appearances and tallied up more than 3,400 minutes of action. He also spent time with Heart of Midlothian in his native Edinburgh, Scotland, and also played one season for Minnesota United before joining the Rapids in 2018.

The Rapids will return to league action as the international break came to a close on Tuesday. Their first task will be against reigning MLS Cup champions New York City FC at 3 p.m. MDT Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

The Rapids (5-3-6, 18 points) sit in 10th in the Western Conference and have yet to win a game away from home this season.

Rapids 2 signs Costa Rican international. Rapids 2 signed 21-year-old Costa Rican international Daniel Chacón on Wednesday to a multi-year contract.

Chacon, a centerback/defensive midfielder, spent his entire club career with his hometown club CS Cartagines. He will join Rapids 2 at the opening of the secondary transfer window in July. A highly-promising prospect, Chacón has been a part of the Costa Rican youth national team set-up since the U-17 World Cup. He recently earned his first three senior national team caps in 2022 for the tail end of World Cup qualifying.

Chacón was also called in to the squad for the intercontinental playoff. Los Ticos beat New Zealand 1-0 on Tuesday to clinch the final spot at the 32-team 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar which will begin in November.

“We are very excited to be able to add Daniel to the Colorado Rapids system,” Rapids 2 General Manager Brian Crookham said in a club statement. “Daniel is one of the most talented players in an up-and-coming generation of Costa Rican players. We look forward to integrating him into our system as quickly as possible while giving him the best possible chance to make the final roster for Costa Rica in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”
