Brutal mega-prison housing 40,000 gangsters welcomes lags with chilling message

A new mega-prison in El Salvador has just welcomed its first 2000 inmates, with an ominous message confirming they will never leave.

Shackled, stripped and forced to line up, the gangster prisoners quickly and brutally came to the realisation that their stay in the country's "centre for terrorists" will not be a comfortable one.

There are no mattresses to sleep on, and that's not even the worst of it, as an astonishing 20% of them won't have a bed at all.

The high-tech jail in Tecoluca is designed for a whopping 40,000 prisoners, with the minister for the country warning those in custody, that they "will never walk out of here".

As part of his war on crime, President Nayib Bukele is trying to make the prison system as unappealing as possible, to act as a deterrent to those getting up to no good.

He tweeted about the mega prison, which is the biggest in the Americas: "At dawn, in a single operation, we transferred the first 2000 members to the Centre for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT)."

He continued: "This will be their new house, where they will live for decades, all mixed, unable to do any further harm to the population."

The prisoners were loaded onto buses, where their feet and hands were placed in shackles.

Bukele shared a video of tattooed barefoot bold men, wearing nothing other than a pair of white boxers, bent over, as presumably told to by the balaclava-wearing guards.

The men were stacked closely together, each sitting with their legs on either side of the person in front of them.

Security minister Gustavo Villatoto said: "We are eliminating this cancer from society.

"Know that you will never walk out of CECOT, you will pay for what you are… cowardly terrorists."

Rights groups have critiqued the prison as violating incarceration standards.

The prison features dining halls, exercise rooms and table tennis tables, but they are reserved exclusively for the guards.

Inmates will only have the opportunity to leave their room for legal hearings via video conference, or if they're being punished in an unlit and windowless isolation cell.

Since his fight against violence has ensued, Bukele has rounded up 63,000 gang members, some of whom were arrested without warrants.

The prison situated 46 miles southeast of the capital, San Salvador, consists of eight buildings, all made of reinforced concrete.

They all include 32 cells of approximately 100 square metres. And as per the Public Works Minister, Romeo Rodriguez, each one will hold over 100 inmates.

In addition, the cells only have two sinks and two toilets between them.
