Brit teen who saw family drown in Costa de Sol pool says she ‘nearly died too’

A Brit teen who saw her dad, brother and sister drown in a swimming pool said she nearly died too.

Favour Diya, 14, told Spanish police she had started “sliding” towards the deep part of the pool.

She “got scared” and struggled to reach safety after realising she was out of her depth.

Favour saw her dad Gabriel, 52, take off his trousers and jump in to try to save his children.

But all three drowned at the Club La Costa World resort near Fuengirola.

Police have taken statements from Favour and her mum Olubunmi, 49, from Charlton, south-east London, who were on a week-long holiday.

Favour said that although she and her siblings had had swimming lessons at school they were not regular pool users.

“We’ve normally been in pools where the water starts off being shallow and gets deeper with the deep end being the part furthest from the area where you get in,’’ she told police.

“We weren’t aware that the deepest part of the pool was the bit in the middle and my brother and sister went towards that part.”

She added that her desperate mum had knocked on doors near the pool to alert hotel staff.

Spanish police say they found “nothing irregular” with the pool.
