Bolton now worst-hit coronavirus hotspot after huge spike in positive cases

Bolton has shot to the top of the infection rates list for coronvairus in England after a sharp increase in cases of the deadly virus.

The Lancashire town – which is within Greater Manchester – had hoped to see lockdown restrictions eased this week, despite cases of the Covid-19 virus increasing, before a U-turn meant restrictions remained in place.

Fresh figures released relating to the number of people infected per 100,000 show Bolton leading a list of 10 areas with the highest infection rates.

While women under 30 have reportedly accounted for a sharp increase in cases in the Wirral and Merseyside regions.

The top 10 worst hit areas based on Covid-19 tests carried out in laboratories are: Bolton, Pendle, Rossendale, Oldham, Bradford, South Tyneside, Corby, Rochdale, Manchester, Blackburn with Darwen.

Bolton has now overtaken Pendle in Lancashire to become the hardest hit area on the list after 220 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the seven days to August 31.

The statistic equates to 76.5 per 100,000 people – the the highest in England and a sharp spike from 17.4 in the seven days to August 24.

The borough is currently in lockdown along with Trafford following advice from authorites.

Meanwhile the Wirral has recorded 45 new cases, causing its rate to soar from 13.9 to 29.6 of 100,000 people.

  • Coronavirus 'hit squad' dispatched to UK town teetering towards lockdown

Seeking to reassure locals about the rising numbers earlier this week, Council leader Cllr Pat Hackett told the Mirror: “Wirral currently has a low number of coronavirus cases when compared to many other parts of the North West. However we cannot be complacent.

“Recent figures show that coronavirus is still circulating in our community and I would urge anyone who is experiencing Covid-19 symptoms to self-isolate and book a test.

"We have increased testing in the borough with mobile units operating throughout August and this will continue in September, in addition to the satellite testing site in Bidston. As a result, we are seeing more positive cases as more people come forward to get tested."

  • Greece and Portugal remain safe on travel quarantine list but government issues warning

Local authorities have also surmised that the increase in positive results is linked to an increase in mobile testing in the area.

Bradford has also recorded an increase in cases, up from 41.5 to 56.5 per 100,000, with 305 new cases.

While Rochdale is up from 31.9 to 44.1 per 100,000, with 98 new cases.

And Trafford is up from 21.1 to 39.2 per 100,000, with 93 new cases – despite being in lockdown since 30 July.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on September 3 on the Government's coronavirus online dashboard.
