Archbishop carries out "the most violent baptism ever" in church ceremony

An Orthodox Archbishop has been criticised for performing the "most violent baptism ever" in a video which has emerged on social media.

The clip shows the enthusiastic Archbishop repeatedly dunk a tiny baby into a baptismal font, both feet-first and headfirst in a busy church.

Children are seen step backwards in shock in the background before the clergyman hands the child back to his unperturbed parents.

It is believed the clip was filmed in Ayia Napa, Cyprus, at a Greek Orthodox church.

Greek Orthodox baptisms traditionally see the Archbishop dunk the baby into the font three times "forcefully" as the method is seen as a solution to address declining birth rates.

The video was shared widely on social media this week and many online have condemned this "particularly rough" approach.

One Twitter user posted: "Omg that’s the most violent baptism?! I’ve ever seen?!"

Another wrote: "I’m shocked the baby survived this violent baptism."

One Catholic wrote: "This isn’t a catholic baptism………………’s orthodox………my baptism was a less violent version of this."

Another Twitter user said: "What happened to the softly pouring the water on the babies head??? I’m scared."

Others on Facebook shared their disgust.

One person posted: "I found this extremely disturbing. How did no one react?"

Another wrote: "It’s horrible. It’s particularly rough."
