A hotel owner known as the 'Female Basil Fawlty' threatened to burn her ex-employee's house down in a row over her lizard

Ex-barrister Shirley Bothroyd, 60, left pet Oberon in her flat while away for three weeks.

Ex-employee Layla Hall, who’d cared for the animal before, broke in and rescued him, Exeter crown court heard.

When she refused to return the pet, Bothroyd told her: “I know where you live.

I’m going to burn the place down.”

Bothroyd, previously jailed for attacking her staff at the Bay Hotel in Teignmouth, Devon, admitted threatening to commit criminal damage.

She was given a hospital order to help her with alcohol and mental health problems.

The lizard has since died.
