The Best Looks From the 2021 Met Gala
To make up for last year’s lack of a Met Gala, the fashion gods decided to bless everyone with two. The first, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” is just the beginning and tonight’s red carpet looks could be a preview of what’s set to go down with “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” on May 5, 2022, the first Monday in May of next year.
Together, the two exhibits celebrate American fashion and, for the first time, ever, create a two-part Met Gala that gives stars, models, and designers the chance to wear two show-stopping looks to celebrate American fashion.
Co-chairs Amanda Gorman, Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, and Naomi Osaka make up the youngest group of co-chairs, ever, and the guest list reflected that, with attendees including Emma Chamberlain and Olivia Rodrigo.
“I wanted both shows to be collection-focused exhibitions,” Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute told Vogue. “And I’ve been really impressed by American designers’ responses to the social and political climate, particularly around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity, and I’m just finding their work very, very self-reflective. I really do believe that American fashion is undergoing a Renaissance. I think young designers in particular are at the vanguard of discussions about diversity and inclusion, as well as sustainability and transparency.”
