Zac Efron is unrecognisable as downtrodden drifter in new movie Gold

Zac Efron’s career trajectory away from squeaky clean roles continues with his latest part in Gold.

The actor shared a behind-the-scenes look at himself in character for the Australian thriller, in which he plays the mysterious Man One.

In the photo Zac is huddled inside a makeshift tent in the middle of sprawling desert landscape with not a soul in sight.

His face is covered in grime and he is sporting a bushy unkempt beard and dirty clothing.

In the picture caption Zac wrote: ‘No signal out here in the desert’.

Gold, an original from streaming platform Stan, sounds like it will be an intense watch as it follows two drifters who discover gold in the desert, their greed soon driving them to extraordinary lengths.

The plot synopsis reads: ‘When two drifters travelling through the outback stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found, the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment.

‘The other man remains and must endure the harsh desert climate, preying wolves and intruders, whilst battling the creeping doubt that he has been abandoned to his own fate.’

The role comes as the Baywatch star appears to be settling into life Down Under amid rumours he wants to move there permanently.

He previously mentioned quitting Hollywood in travel series Down To Earth during a visit to Sardinia, saying the lifestyle that comes with being a star is ‘not conducive’ to a ‘long, happy, mentally-sound life.’

Gold is slated for release in 2021.
