The Chair sees Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve star Sandra Oh star as Ji-Yoon Kim, the first-ever female head of the English department at Pembroke University. The Netflix series came out last week, Friday, August 20, with all six episodes coming out at once. The show also stars the likes of Bob Balaban, Nana Mensah and Holland Taylor.

Where is The Chair on Netflix filmed?

The Chair was shot in the US state of Pennsylvania which is near the likes of Washington, Philadelphia and New York.

But in terms of the scenes which took place at the university, these were actually filmed on real-life campuses.

The two universities used for the show were Washington & Jefferson College and Shadyside campus of Chatham University in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh International Airport was also used when Bill (played by Jay Duplass) was saying goodbye to his daughter.

Some of Washington & Jefferson College had also been previously used for Netflix’s psychological thriller Mindhunter.

Filming around Pittsburgh took place earlier this year and, according to the show’s co-creator Amanda Peet, included real professors as extras.

She told Trib Live: “It was so incestuous, but it was also really fun that they were real professors. They sounded so real and seemed at home.”

Students from the campus were also used as extras in the comedy-drama.

This isn’t the first time Netflix has used Pennsylvania for shooting some of its original shows either.

The American state has been used as a backdrop on other projects like Sweet Girl and I Am Not Okay With This.

Pennsylvania will be used once more for Archive 81, an upcoming horror about an archivist reconstructing the work of a filmmaker who was looking into a dangerous cult.

As of yet, no release date has been announced for Archive 81.

In terms of the future of The Chair, so far, it remains unclear.

The Oh-led series has not yet been renewed for a second season by Netflix.

Usually, the streaming service takes a few months before making a decision if a show wasn’t given an early renewal prior to its release.

But seeing as The Chair has only been out for a few days, it is still too early to tell what the future holds for the show.

There could be a chance it will return though, seeing how season one ended.

Everything was wrapped up fairly neatly, bar the fact Bill turned down Pembroke’s settlement offer.

He is determined to get the job he loves back so if there is a second series, will Bill be able to return to the job he loves?

The Chair is available to watch on Netflix.
