Watching wine experts talk about wine can be a bit like watching architects dance about architecture, which makes it so refreshing when a production actually gets it right. The locally-made Battle of the Vines takes three vinous experts and challenges them each week to select wines from different styles, states, and price points that are then blindly judged by a mix of wine boffins and ordinary folk.

In a State of Origin series that's much more interesting than the rugby version, a Tasmanian pinot might go up against a Victorian one, or a WA cabernet sauvignon against one from SA. Yes, that sounds as exciting as watching grapes ferment, but the fun of BOTV comes from the casting of trio Arthur Robert, Liinaa Berry and above all Frank Moylan, a man born to be bullish on TV. Exhibiting the same irreverence and informality as the very excellent The Wine Show from British actors Matthew Goode and Matthew Rhys, it's the Mastermind for anyone who loves a drop. LD
