Ex Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith calls for benefits to be increased in line with inflation to provide ‘shield’ against cost-of-living crisis Mr Duncan-Smith made…
On tonight’s (May 8) episode of the revived Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? we met Lynn Buckingham from Cambridge – a woman who’s probably sleeping on the sofa this week.
Lynn really wanted to win enough money to buy a conservatory.
But her husband Ian had set his expectations much higher, and wanted a Bugatti Chiron (spoiler alert: Ian would soon be very disappointed).
Lynn got off to a great start, becoming the only potential contestant to successfully put six different UK honours in order (what’s a DBE?).
She also knew that Jamie Dornan stars in Fifty Shades of Grey and that a group of musicians is called an ensemble.
Yet she did stumble on a question about the famous ‘We Can Do It!’ World War Two posters and used her 50/50 lifeline.
But we forgave her, and with her safety net at £32,000, we were all rooting for Lynn as she got to the £64,000 question.
Admittedly, most of us were stumped when host Jeremy Clarkson asked: “In 2016, whom did Boris Johnson succeed as Foreign Secretary? Liam Fox, Philip Hammond, Kenneth Clarke or William Hague.”
But straight off the bat, Lynn said “it wasn’t Hammond” (a statement she’d live to regret).
Unsure of the answer, Lynn first tried her Ask The Host lifeline, and Jeremy was as useless as ever.
He thought the correct answer was William Hague, but he wasn’t sure either.
Then, she phoned husband Ian.
Ian thought the answer was Hammond, but he wasn’t 100%.
But those in the know realised that Ian was the one Lynn needed to listen to.
However, despite having a safety net of £32,000 and not knowing the answer, Lynn decided to gamble and go against her husband, picking Hague because she really wanted that conservatory.
But before the correct answer could be revealed, the show went to an ad break, giving everyone time to Google the answer and realise Lynn had just lost herself £31,000.
And when Lynn eventually found out the right answer, all she could say was “Ian will kill me!” as Twitter worried about the state of Lynn’s marriage and her conservatory.
That’s the conservatory gone, Lynn, and probably your marriage.
