Viral BBC weatherman is drumming for 24 hours straight for Children in Need

BBC weatherman Owain Wyn Evans will bang the drums for a whopping 24 hours straight for this year’s Children In Need.

At the start of the pandemic, when everyone was getting used to the ‘new normal’ (shudder) and everything was honestly quite scary, the public was looking everywhere to find some positivity and happiness.

And in April 2020, they found it in an unlikely source: the weatherman for BBC News.

One overcast Wednesday morning, Owain, who was working from home, played along with the famous introduction theme song on his drumkit – and instantly went mega-viral.

Audiences at the time called him a ‘national treasure’ who had ‘won 2020’, and now, 18 months later, Owain and his drums are back to help make a positive difference in the world once again.

The self-described ‘unapologetically flamboyant drumming weatherman’ is drumming for 24 hours straight in a massive ‘drumathon’ for Children in Need 2021.

Writing on Twitter, Owain confirmed he was ‘undertaking a MAMMOTH challenge’ for the annual fundraiser in ‘putting my drumming skills to the test in a gargantuan 24-hour [BBC Breakfast] Drumathon’.

‘My poor dainty arms!’ he joked.

The challenge will undoubtedly be tough, but Owain will not be alone.

Musicians from across the UK will spur him on to raise as much money as possible for the BBC charity, ‘creating a wall of sound from Salford to St Andrews, Swansea to Strabane’.

The Children In Need website has even confirmed that Mark Richardson, drummer for Skunk Anansie and formerly of Feeder, will ‘rally the troops to play with him’, and Al Murray, Nicko McBrain and Dame Evelyn Glennie ‘will all take part to inspire Owain to the very end’.

Owain’s challenge will begin on BBC Breakfast at 8.35am on Friday, 12 November, and you’ll be able to watch the whole 24-hour drumathon on the iPlayer.

This year’s Children in Need will air on Friday November 19.
