Tributes to Peter Stringfellow led by Calum Best and Loose Women after his shock cancer death aged 77

The nightclub owner lost his secret battle with cancer after being diagnosed in 2008.

Waking up to the sad news, Calum Best led the tributes when he said: "RIP Peter Stringfellow, so many amazing memories I have with this man, from when I first came to UK and he took care of me for years in his club to staying with him and his family in Spain.

"Rest in peace friend, my thoughts r with ur family. No doubt a legacy will live on."

Loose Women tweeted their condolences, saying: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Frank Bruno MBE said: "RIP Peter Stringfellow, I met this man a few times over the years.

"A great guy & king of the discos. My thoughts are with his family ??"

Peter's close friend, radio presenter James Whale, told Good Morning Britain that Peter had made his late wife Melinda laugh for one of the last times before her death.

He said: "They talked about their chemo on the phone.
"One of the last times she laughed was when she was chatting to Peter who was winding her up."

James added: "Peter didn't want people to know [he had cancer]. He dealt with it in a very stoic way.

"It had come back in different forms and was very aggressive.
"He was finding the treatment quite hard."

Ex-model Lizzie Cundy described meeting Peter for the first time in a Covent Garden cafe  in 1994.

She told GMB: "Peter looked at me and said 'wow you should be a model', I looked up and there he was in a very loud jacket.

"He told me to go and call this girl who works at a model agency straight away. He set me off in the modelling world to be honest.

"We've stayed friends ever since.

"He was just the kindest, warmest, most generous man. He was such a wonderful charismatic character.

"I'm just so shocked and sad to hear the news this morning."

His ex-girlfriend, singer Lucy Carr said: "Peter was a huge part of my life and I loved him very dearly.

"I am deeply saddened by the news of his death. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

Friend Carol Voderman said: "Peter Stringfellow…. Rest Not In Peace, but Rest In Mischief (just the way you like it)……..

"Sending love to Coral (Peter's wife of many decades and my friend) and Scotty and all the family xx he leaves behind many smiles that's for sure."
