EXCLUSIVE: Anti-woke British actor Laurence Fox will play Hunter Biden in upcoming film from conservative filmmakers chronicling the president’s son’s ‘partying lifestyle and dodgy business…
Word has now gotten around that Kim Cattrall is not reprising her role as the indomitable Samantha Jones in HBO’s Sex and the City revival And Just Like That... The biggest challenge that the series would face is writing off Samantha since she was one of the main characters and drove a massive following toward the show and its two movies. Recent speculation by a fan suggested that she might die in the reboot, which eventually opened up the topic to more speculation about a possible death in the upcoming series.
Why is Samantha missing from the reboot?
After six seasons and two movies, Cattrall had refused to do another Sex and the City movie in 2016. In a 2017 interview with Piers Morgan, Cattrall said, in no unclear terms, that she was not going to reappear in any Sex and the City movie.
“Not for me,” she said. “That was part of turning 60. That was a very clear moment of, ‘how many years do I have left and what do I want to do with it.’”
She further said that she had “released Samantha,” and that another actor of color could probably take up her role.
In the interview she also hinted at not having the best relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker, her co-star on the show, clearly stating that they were “never friends” and that Parker “could have been nicer.” In the end, though she said that she wished her and any Sex and The City revival the best.
Since then the rumor mill churned out many stories of a feud between Catrall and Parker. Things, however, got heated when in a Twitter exchange after Catrall’s brother’s death, she lashed out at Parker about her condolence message. With that, the idea of a third movie without Catrall was completely abandoned in 2018.
But the idea took the form of a 10-episode series that was officially announced this year and is currently filming in New York City. Cattrall, sticking to her word, is not a part of it, being the only main cast member to not return.
Will Samantha die in the reboot?
On Aug. 4, a video on TikTok captured extras on the set of the series And Just Like That…, dressed in black. This video, Newsweek reported, sparked rumors if Samantha was going to die in the mini-series as a way for her character to be written out of the show. Many fans had a strong reaction to the video, including the TikTok user who posted the video with the caption, “Samantha Jones Can Never Die.”
However, if HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys is to be believed, that is not the case. While talking to TVLine, he said that the story is about women in their 50s and not in their 30s. The story has moved on from the original show and the reboot depicts that transition.
“Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life… They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50,” Bloys told TVLine.
Should we expect another character to die in the series?
Even as it seems that Samantha’s exit will be explained another way in the show, the question of several extras dressed in black is still left unanswered. Some fans guessed the funeral might be of Mr. Big, who plays Carrie’s husband. Another suggested that it might be a diversion created by the producers to misguide the fans and keep the original plot under wraps.
While there is an explanation for the funeral sequence, for now, it looks like the fans will have to wait until the series drops on HBO Max in 2022 to find out what happens.
