Ozark season three is yet to get a release date but fans will be pleased to hear that episodes are being shot. The next instalment of the drama will be picking up in the aftermath of the second series as the Byrdes expanded their work for the Mexican cartel. Marty Byrde (played by Jason Bateman) was hoping to escape from the cartel and flee to Australia where the family could live under new identities but this scheme fell apart after he was betrayed by his wife Wendy (Laura Linney).
Will Marty go down for murder in Ozark season 3?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Ozark season 2
Ahead of the Primetime Emmy Awards, showrunner Chris Mundy hinted that things wouldn’t be going well for Marty after he killed Pastor Mason Young (Michael Mosley) in season two.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mundy said: “Marty is on a slippery slope, but he’s not all the way down yet.”
He also said of the character’s story arc: “Marty has a panic attack and breakdown, and that’s when Wendy really picked up the slack to keep the family going.”
Mundy’s words suggest that it will be Wendy who becomes the main player in season three, confirming she was always heading down this route.
He explained: “I think she was definitely on that path; Wendy found the combination of her North Carolina youth and her Chicago politics fused into a very useful combination in the Ozarks.
“Every time she’s been put to the test, she’s come through, and I would consider season two Wendy’s ascension.”
Perhaps Marty’s mental health could put him in jeopardy and he could finally crack before ending up getting sent to prison.
A prison angle would certainly add another dimension to the show as Wendy and Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) have to work together.
Mundy also said: “For Wendy Byrde, the Ozarks feel more like home than Chicago ever did.
“As we delved into that, we saw a person from a small town who doesn’t mind fighting in the dirt.
“It’s something we understood better and better throughout season two as we explored her evolution.”
Bateman has also teased the new series and hinted at what fans can expect next.
After season three got the green light in 2018, Bateman tweeted: “I’m happy for me, but concerned for Marty – it’s official OZARK 3 is on its way.”
Again, his words hint that Marty will be struggling going forward and could be the weakest link in the Byrde family.
Speaking to The Wrap, he hailed the show’s ambiguous morality, saying “it’s not black and white” and “not good vs. evil or villain vs. hero”.
He said that Ozark tried to come as close to real-life as possible, explaining: “You recognize that you might be saddled with the same type of push-pull based on mistakes.”
Bateman added: “Marty and Wendy, they’re smart people. So they’re not going do things that as an audience member you’d say, ‘Oh, that’s stupid. People would never do that.’
“You can’t really get away with taking a shortcut from a narrative standpoint.”
If this is the case, then Ozark will be depicting what happens to ordinary people who are plunged into an extreme situation like this and how they cope.
