Netflix loves an original date night thriller—and its latest, Fatal Affair, sits nicely alongside recent releases like Secret Obsession and Dangerous Lies. Here's how the streaming platform describes Fatal Affair in a press release: “Ellie (Nia Long) tries to mend her marriage with her husband, Marcus (Stephen Bishop), after a brief encounter with an old friend, David (Omar Epps), only to find that David is more dangerous and unstable than she'd realized.”
Now, take a look at this new trailer, which dropped on July 1:
Feel familiar? The title is not the only thing Fatal Affair has in common with the 1987 classic Fatal Attraction, starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. The main setup is pretty much the same.
In Fatal Attraction, Dan Gallagher (Douglas) is a married man who starts and regrets a casual affair with Alex (Close), an unhinged book editor. When Alex becomes obsessed with Dan, he must save himself and his family from her dogged pursuits.
Which, of course, reminds me of another movie that came out about 11 years ago. Remember when Beyoncé and Idris Elba played a married couple in the 2009 thriller, Obsessed? Well, they did. Of course, no one in their right mind would cheat on Beyoncé, so Elba's character, Derek, is instead hounded by his assistant, Lisa (Ali Larter), who just won't take no for an answer. Unfortunately for Lisa, Derek's wife, Sharon (Beyoncé), is not someone you want to mess with.
So if Fatal Affair looks like your next pick for a Netflix-and-chill kind of night, might I suggest a trip down memory lane while you wait? Fatal Attraction and Obsessed are both available to purchase or rent on Amazon, while Fatal Affair hits Netflix for free on July 16.
